Dick Briefer's Frankenstien

Description

The Golden Age comic publisher Prize Comics has the distinction of creating American comics first ongoing horror title Frankenstein in 1940. Their version of the monster, with his distinctively placed nose, was an updated (for 1930) vision of the monster, and actually was named "Frankenstein."  During the later part of the horror run, he even fought against some of Prize's superheroes, including The Black Owl and Green Lama.

Though it was Briefer's post-war version of the character that was the most distinctive. In 1945 the character was relaunched as a humor title, with a looser, more cartoonish art style, including the monster's nose receding even farther up his face. While the stories were aimed at children, they had a degree of adult sensibility that made the quite appealing and popular. The comic could almost be seen as a kind of prototype for Herman Munster.

For this drawing, I was kind of splitting the difference between the purely cartoonish Frankenstein and his earlier serious monster version.

Oh neat!  It's interesting that the character was used in such completely different ways - serious and comedic.  What wild design, with his nose so high up!  I mean, with his nose up that high he actually kinda looks like some text character faces! O-O
